What is the story behind Lord Shiva's fight with demon Andhaka?
According to Hindu legend, the sweat that dripped from Lord Brahma's forehead gave birth to the demon Andhak. He left his father and mother and received a blessing from Lord Brahma that made him unbeatable against gods and demons.
Andhak gained power and eventually threatened and even engaged in combat with the gods. He overthrew numerous gods, gained control of heaven, and wreaked havoc.
When the gods came to Lord Shiva for assistance, he made the decision to confront Andhak. Lord Shiva used his trident to assault Andhak in the ensuing battle, but Andhak utilised his magical abilities to produce a new head each time Lord Shiva was beheaded.
Then, in order to destroy Andhak, Lord Shiva had to use a ruse. He claimed to be pleased with Andhak's strength and extended a blessing. Andhak pleaded with Lord Shiva to adopt him as a son. The demon's haughtiness was then destroyed, and Lord Shiva embraced him, revealing that he was Andhak's real father and leaving him helpless.
